The Procedure

Dental implant procedures occur over multiple appointments. They may take anywhere from three to nine months. The following are steps you can expect to go through when getting dental implants:

• The Initial Evaluation: During your first visit, your dentist thoroughly assesses your oral health to determine if you qualify for the implants and plan your treatment. You may undergo x-rays and 3D imaging to catch any issues that the naked eye cannot see.
• Placing the Implant: Once your dentist evaluates your dental health, they will ascertain the ideal placement of your implant posts. Your dental care team will surgically place the implant posts in your jaw with the utmost care and precision.
• Recovery: Your jaw will need adequate time to heal following the procedure. The recovery period is critical because it allows the implants to fuse with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation. Recovery may take a few months.
• Abutment Placement: Abutments form the base for prosthetic teeth to attach to the posts. After the abutment is in place, you will need two additional recovery weeks to heal the surrounding gum tissue.
• Restoration Attachment: Following the recovery period, your dentist will place the final restoration on the abutment. Depending on your individual needs, you may receive a crown, bridge, or dentures to replace your missing teeth.

Post-Procedure

You can expect side effects following your dental implant surgery, just like with any other surgical procedure. You may see: 

• slight swelling around the gums and face
• some pain and discomfort at the placement site
• Sinus issues
• bruising of the skin and gum
• minor bleeding
