Dental Fillings, Inlays and Onlays
Teeth are the strongest part of the human body. Sadly, they do not have any regenerative abilities, so if they get damaged they cannot heal themselves. To restore them to full functionality and protect them from further damage and infection, fillings, inlays, and onlays can be used to make repairs.
While they all follow the same basic concept, each type of restoration is suitable to treat a certain amount of damage.
One of the most familiar dental procedures, a filling is used to repair the damage caused by tooth decay. To place a filling, the decay will be removed and the area cleaned out. Composite resin is used to seal the hole, preventing bacteria from entering while restoring your tooth’s functionality. While many materials are available for a dental filling, tooth colored composite resin offers the most natural looking restoration.
Inlays and Onlays
An inlay or onlay is used to repair mild to moderate damage when there is not enough tooth structure to support a filling. While an inlay is contained within the cusps or rounded edges, of a tooth, an onlay covers one or more cusps or the entire biting surface of the tooth. They allow for the preservation of more healthy tooth than a dental crown. Most of the time, an inlay or onlay will require two visits to be placed, as the restoration is constructed outside the office in a dental lab.
After clearing out decay and damaged tooth structure, Dr. Mashkouri will take impressions of the prepared tooth. These will be used to create a strong, durable restoration. Usually, they are made of porcelain, to match the color and transparency of natural teeth, but sometimes other materials may be used.
During your consultation, Dr. Mashkouri will advise you as to which type of restoration is best for your unique situation.
