Avoid These Habits If You Have Invisalign Aligners

Home 9 Blog 9 Avoid These Habits If You Have Invisalign Aligners

One of the main benefits that entice people to choose Invisalign aligners over traditional braces is that they are simpler to use and don’t limit your options for eating and drinking. However, this doesn’t mean that they require no maintenance or special care at all. There are some important guidelines to follow to ensure you achieve the best possible results with the least amount of fuss. Here are the bad habits to avoid during the course of your treatment with Invisalign aligners.

Keeping Your Trays In While Drinking

Beverages such as soda, coffee, tea, and wine can stain your aligner trays, so that they no longer look natural and “invisible” when you wear them. Sugary and acidic liquids can also get trapped in the tray, where they remain pressed up against your teeth, causing decay and enamel erosion. The only beverage that is safe to drink while wearing your aligners is water.

Using Your Tongue to Push Your Trays Around

Towards the end of the cycle with each aligner, you may find that your trays have more wiggle room. It can be tempting to play with them by pushing them around with your tongue. As much as you may want to, try not to. Not only does this irritate the tongue, it can warp the shape of the aligners and reduce their effectiveness at moving your teeth into their new position.

Not Keeping to Your Aligner Schedule

Every day matters with Invisalign treatment, so waiting even an extra day to switch to your next set of aligners can have an impact on the length and effectiveness of your treatment. Stick to your schedule to ensure that you stay on track and get the results you want according to the original timeline.

Not Using Your Aligner Case

Leaving your aligners out in the open exposes them to dust, bacteria, and the elements. They’re also at much greater risk of getting damaged or lost. That’s why we recommend keeping your aligner case with you at all times and using it every single time you remove your trays.

Not Brushing Regularly

It’s important to brush your teeth before putting your aligners in, since any food residue or bacteria that’s left on your teeth gets trapped inside the trays once you put them on. Over time, this can lead to cavities, tooth decay, and other oral health issues.
